Why do aluminium windows fade?
Most modern day aluminium window systems are powdercoated, that is the coating that gives it the charcoal, bronze or black finish. This powdercoating has a lifespan of about 4-5 years before the weather conditions start getting the better of it. Sun damage, rain and salt spray (on coastal areas) are all major contributing factors to your fading aluminium window frames.
This particular client contacted us out of Cape Town, Western Cape – where sun damage and salt spray were the two biggest culprits that caused his aluminium to tarnish. After building an additional room on to their house, new bronze aluminium frames were installed and the difference between the faded frames and the new ones became extremely apparent which lead to him asking “how to restore my faded aluminium?”

During the refurbishment process, we didn’t have to touch the new frames at all and no colour matching was needed. Using specifically designed resins made to restore and protect powdercoated metals we went at it and started the process.
During this process of restoring the old, faded frames 2 steps were being used:
1. Cleaning and neutralising the current state of the aluminium.
2. Glazing the aluminium frames with a self levelling, clear resin.
The whole process took the team 2 days to complete and the results, as always, were astonishing. The bronze colour of the frame shone in the sun and brought the liveliness back to our client’s home. We left a smile on our client’s face along with a 5 YEAR GUARANTEE!
Is it worth it restoring rather than replacing aluminium window frames?
For the most part it can be extremely expensive to replace the existing window- and doorframes. Although aesthetically displeasing few people go that route and rather decide to make peace with their tarnished aluminium window system.
